Using genomics and big data to uncover insights into the etiology of mental illnesses

We are a collaborative and interdisciplinary research team at:

  • The Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and the New York State Psychiatric Institute
  • Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute at Columbia University
  • The New York Genome Center

We generate, analyze, and integrate genetic and functional data to understand the causes of mental illnesses. Using DNA sequencing, we have identified specific genes associated with severe psychiatric disorders. We aim to these findings to build specific biological hypotheses on disease pathogenesis that lead to more effective therapeutic development.

Though grounded on sequencing technologies, statistical methods and data science, we work with clinicians at the Department of Psychiatry, neurobiologists and experimentalists at the Zuckerman Institute, and bioengineers at the New York Genome Center to study mental health using diverse and complementary approaches.
